Binh Dinh Takes Strong Actions Against Iuu Fishing

The south-central province of Binh Dinh is firmly addressing the issue of fishing vessels that lack registration, fishing licenses, and certificates of seaworthiness—referred to as “three no's” fishing vessels—as part of its efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Currently, the province has over 1,000 of these "three no's" boats, most of which range from six to twelve meters in length and operate in nearshore areas.

Lieutenant Tran Dang Binh Dat, head of the Mui Tan border guard station, stated that these vessels are prohibited from operating at sea, and their owners are required to sign a commitment to non-violation.

The European Commission has advised that all vessels must have registration and fishing licenses, warning that failure to comply could jeopardize the removal of the "yellow card" warning.

To address this, the province is enhancing communication efforts to raise awareness among fishermen about the regulations. The provincial Department of Fisheries, led by Nguyen Huu Nghia, is expediting the registration process, aiming to complete it by mid-May.

Colonel Nguyen Van Linh, commander of the province’s border guard, emphasized that fishermen are being encouraged to adhere to the laws, particularly the 2017 Law on Fisheries. The border guard is collaborating with relevant authorities to patrol and monitor local waters.

Colonel Linh also suggested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should assist in installing monitoring devices on "three no's" boats to ensure compliance.
