Durian - Sầu Riêng

The Durian is undeniably one of the most unique fruits in existence, distinguished by its unmistakable aroma that evokes a spectrum of reactions from deep appreciation to sheer disgust. Six times larger than a cantaloupe, its thick green husk, adorned with sharp, projecting thorns, resembles a jackfruit but with a more formidable exterior. Opening it requires a knife and careful maneuvering to avoid the thorns.

Once cracked open, its interior reveals creamy, custard-like flesh nestled within segmented cells. This rich flesh is the source of the durian's divisive fragrance—some find it irresistibly tempting, while others deem it nauseatingly offensive. Remarkably, even when the shell is intact, the aroma permeates the air, detectable from a distance.

The distinct odor lingers on one's breath for hours after consumption or even just handling the fruit. Interestingly, in Vietnamese culture, the fruit is known as Sầu Riêng, meaning "one's own sorrows."

Despite its polarizing characteristics, the Durian is considered an exquisite delicacy, commanding a high price. For those captivated by its unique qualities, the experience and expense are undoubtedly worthwhile.
