Vietnam’s shrimp exports to US soar

(VEN) - In 2024, Vietnam exported 69,295 tonnes of shrimp worth US$691.6 million to the US, an increase of 13 percent in volume and 6 percent in value compared to 2023.

Statistics show that the US imported 762,804 tonnes of shrimp worth US$6.1 billion in 2024, a decrease of 3 percent in volume and 6 percent in value compared to 2023 (788,209 tonnes worth over US$6.4 billion). Despite year-on-year increases in the import volume during the last four months of 2024, it was not enough to offset the declines from previous months.

The average import price shows a slight rebound. After reaching a peak of US$4.73 per pound in April 2022, the average price dropped to US$3.57 per pound in March 2024 before rising to US$4.01 per pound in December.

India, the largest shrimp supplier to the US, accounting for 39 percent of the market, ended 2024 with a slight decline compared to 2023. The US imported 294,333 tonnes worth US$2.2 billion of shrimp from India in 2024, a decrease of 1 percent in volume and 4 percent in value compared to 2023.

The average import price from India ended 2024 at US$3.90 per pound, a 10 percent increase compared to US$3.56 per pound in 2023.

Ecuador, the second-largest shrimp supplier to the US, exported 187,000 tonnes of shrimp worth US$1.3 billion to the US in 2024, a decrease of 9 percent in volume and 8 percent in value compared to 2023. The average price in December 2024 was US$3.52 per pound against US$3.10 per pound in December 2023.

Indonesia, the third-largest shrimp supplier to the US, exported 134,803 tonnes of shrimp worth US$1.0 billion in 2024, a decrease of 8 percent in volume and 12 percent in value compared to 2023. The average price of Indonesia’s shrimp also increased, reaching US$3.83 per pound in December 2024, up from US$3.47 per pound a year earlier.

Vietnam exported 69,295 tonnes of shrimp worth US$691.6 million to the US in 2024, an increase of 13 percent in volume and 6 percent in value compared to 2023. The average price in December 2024 was US$4.95 per pound, up from US$4.55 per pound a year earlier.

In the week from February 3-9, 2025, wholesale shrimp prices in the US remained stable for whiteleg shrimp sourced from Latin America.

Prices for headless shell-on shrimp and whole head-on shrimp have been stabilized after recent declines, and the market is generally balanced. However, prices for whiteleg shrimp sourced from Asia have been adjusted downward, especially for easy-peel products. Prices have increased for peeled and deveined shrimp with tails in the 8-12 count range.
