Scientific name: Katsuwonus pelamis
English name: Skipjack Tuna
Characteristics of striped tuna: The fish's body is diamond-shaped, the cross-section of the body is nearly round. Pointed head, slightly oblique mouth, two dorsal fins close together. The first dorsal fin has high front fin rays and gradually lower rear fin rays, forming a circular concave shape. The body is not covered with scales except for the chest armor. The back is dark blue, the belly is silvery white. The edges of the dorsal fin, abdomen, and chest are silver-white, along the abdomen there are 3-5 large black stripes nearly parallel to each other. The lateral line curves down behind the second dorsal fin. The average length of the fish is from 36 - 60 cm, the common weight is from 1 - 6 kg, the largest fish is 25 kg.
Distribution: This fish is widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions of the oceans, commonly found in the seas of South Africa, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, China, India, and Sri Lanka. In Vietnam, distributed from the Gulf of Tonkin to the Gulf of Thailand, but often found in the Central Coast and many in the high seas. Striped tuna is a small fish that travels in large schools in high density in the open sea, sometimes coming close to shore to feed, often mixed with tuna and shrew.
Fishing gear: This is the main target of the purse seine fishery. There are also some fishing gears to exploit this fish species such as: long line, jerk line, and drag line.
The fishing season for striped tuna is year-round. This is one of the economically valuable and widely caught tuna species.
