Dong Thap: Developing the pangasius industry towards increasing value-added and sustainable growth
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Dong Thap is a key region for pangasius farming, boasting the largest production in the Mekong Delta. In the first seven months of 2024, the estimated aquaculture area reached 4,778 hectares, with a harvest yield of 307,336 tons. Of this, the intensive pangasius farming area covered 2,042 hectares, with a harvest of 252,670 tons.
In July, the price of pangasius decreased compared to the previous month due to export difficulties, primarily driven by increased transportation costs (as vehicles had to take longer routes) and slow consumption in the Chinese market. As for pangasius fingerlings, prices continued to fall due to increased supply while demand for stocking remained low. The export price of commercial pangasius and other aquatic products remained stable compared to the previous month.
Forecasts for the remaining months of 2024 indicate that while Vietnam's pangasius export market will continue to face challenges, consumption is expected to improve due to reduced inflation and low reserves. In the near future, the province will continue to develop the pangasius industry, focusing on increasing value-added and sustainable development. This will be achieved by applying advanced scientific and technological solutions in management, regularly monitoring water quality in aquaculture, closely tracking production and market trends, and implementing digital transformation in the management and operation of the pangasius industry, including planning, identification code issuance, production data, market information, and environmental monitoring. Additionally, the province will implement a project for high-quality three-tier pangasius breeding collaboration and enhance inspections of breeding facilities, aquaculture feed production, food safety conditions, and the quality control of pangasius products.
